ONE SOUL: The Afikim Holocaust Education Exhibit

The Holocaust ended in 1945. Over the past 58 years, the messages of strength, faith, principle, heroism and vitality of spirit associated with the Holocaust are slowly ebbing. While many middle and high schools across the country teach children about the Holocaust, there is a disconnect between the history learned and life lived.”One Soul” attempts to fuse the lessons of history within the mind and heart of the developing adolescent of today (no standard curriculum). Because of the complex and very personal lessons that can be learned from the study of the Holocaust, it is imperative that the Holocaust be taught in an innovative and compelling fashion.

Working with Jack Morton Wordwide, the Afikim Foundation has developed a permanent self-contained series of Holocaust Education Exhibits for grades seven through 12. The goal of the Foundation is to give this exhibit to public and private schools across the country and, eventually, the world (since the exhibit is freestanding, graphic and print-based, it can easily translate the materials into the language of any particular country).

The Afikim Foundation’s One Soul: Holocaust Education Exhibit presents the history and lessons of the Holocaust in a thought-provoking and intimate manner. Accompanying the exhibit will be a “toolbox” of pro-active, contemporary programs with activities ranging from art projects and writings, to full-length films that will elicit a bonding experience between the youth of today with the powerful and ageless messages of yesterday.

Every year, the exhibit will explore a particular strength and/or value learned from the Holocaust. The lesson would then be the basis for a yearlong initiative for the sponsoring school institution. The lessons could range from personal improvement, the eradication of racism, to caring for the needy. All of these lessons would be inspired by the challenges, terror and strength of those who lived and died during the Holocaust.

The exhibit will include a step-by-step curriculum along with an Afikim hosted companion web site for teachers and students.

The Benefit
The Afikim Foundation’s goal is to give the Holocaust Education Exhibit to at least 100 different schools across the country. Over the next decade the Foundation’s vision is to have the exhibit placed in thousands of schools covering every state in the Union.

This initiative will engage and challenge hundreds of thousands of young people in their own community. It is an opportunity to greatly enrich and enhance the manner in which middle school and high school students learn about the Holocaust. Through this initiative, the Afikim Foundation is taking the messages of the Holocaust and recasting them in a manner that will lead to reflection and specific action on the part of students.

The initiative does not begin and end with the exhibit and its components. Through the curriculum that accompanies each exhibit, students and teachers will be challenged to take action throughout the year – in their schools and communities.

The Afikim Foundation will provide schools with mentoring and training necessary to bring the exhibit to life throughout the school year. In addition, through a specially designed web site, the Foundation will provide partner schools and their students with year-round support and opportunities to expand the exhibit curriculum.
