A Film Festival with
a Special Purpose
Imagine a series of short films – 25
miutes in length – each one dealing with an aspect of Jewish
life in a profoundly artful and compelling way. In some instances,
humor will be the informing element in the film. In others, sadness
and despair will reveal truths about life. Whatever the tone, each
film will resonate with good common sense – or what we might
call the wisdom of the Torah.
Now imagine you are a kiruv professional,
a community center, a cutting edge synagogue educator working
diligently in serving your constituency in places like Charleston,
SC, Phoenix, AZ, Edison, NJ, Mt. Kisco, NY, Chicago and Los Angeles – and
that you are sitting at an Afikim-conceived Film Festival — designed
to offer these films with accompanying source materials to communities
large and small.
Actually, you don’t have to imagine because that’s what Afikim
has on the drawing board and the schedule for the coming Winter 2006.
The films
originate from Israel, from the Maale Film School in Jerusalem. All were
produced and filmed by students as part of their graduation requirements
and each one selected was an
award winner.
